British Association of Snowsport Instructors

British Association of Snowsport Instructors - BASI

John Mordue has been Nordic Director of BASI for the last 7 years and BASI Nordic now has over 200 nordic/cross country members. During the last 7 years as Nordic Director, John has had contact with about 50 to 60 of these members, all of whom are passionate and enthusiastic about nordic/cross country skiing, and contribute positively to a vibrant network within BASI.

The instructor training and assessment courses give members great opportunities to achieve the high standards set. These take you all the way up to ISIA level with a mountain safety off track remit. Progression through these levels provides a mechanism for members to continue developing as instructors and become increasingly competent. Prior preparation is a very significant factor is getting a successful outcome on a course.

In addition BASI has a separate discipline for Telemark which is in essence an integral part of the cross country/nordic discipline. Thats certainly what Sondre Norheim thought! (If that reference doesn't ring a bell, look him up on google!) Again the telemark courses provide a staged progression to instruct at the highest level with both ISIA and a mountain safety off track remit.

BASI cross country advertises courses on the website and military groups are also invited to commission closed courses for their personnel. BASI also offers a defined process to recognise certain qualifications gained in the military or from other ski organisations as appropriate. Recognition can also given to both winter ML and IML qualifications in the progression to meeting mountain safety ability and thereby achieving an off track remit.

BASI members with a full current licence get public liability insurance cover for activities which fall within the remit of their level as an instructor.

You can find out more on the BASI website (link above) or email questions to the office.

British Biathlon Union

The British Biathlon Union (BBU) was formed in 1996 as the National Governing Body for the Olympic Sport of Biathlon in Great Britain. The BBU is a full member of the International Biathlon Union (IBU), The British Olympic Association (BOA), National Olympic Committee (NOC) and UK Sport. It is a not for profit, membership based organisation, funded through membership, the IBU and wider donors. It has required sustained investment from the military where the combined energy, drive and determination of Athletes and Staff has allowed for continued International representation on the World Stage for over 4 decades.

The BBU has created a stable platform where the opportunity is now to dare to push British boundaries and pioneer a pathway from grassroots to World Cup success.  It is committed to fulfilling its vision, whilst understanding there is much to be done. The BBU does not fear ambitious targets and will thrive on the challenge. It is now dedicated to building the foundations to make this a viable model to increase participation and harness talent. They endeavour to create a legacy across all levels, changing the landscape of British Biathlon and ensure Great Britain remains on the World Stage.

They encourage participation in the sport to improve physical and psychological wellbeing for life, but also offer a pathway to grow and develop the young talent that wishes to progress and deliver World Class performances. They will enhance the profile, and drive the growth of the BBU through innovative thinking, a dynamic management team and collaboratively working with our stakeholders to deliver a world leading programme.

RAF Nordic

RAF Nordic

The Royal Air Force Nordic Association offers all serving RAF Regular, Reserve and University Air Squadron personnel the unique opportunity to sample one of the most physically challenging and enjoyable of the winter sports - Nordic skiing. In the RAF, Nordic skiing encompasses the separate international winter sport disciplines of Biathlon (skiing and shooting), and Cross-country skiing. We offer our membership full training in both disciplines and the opportunity to represent the Royal Air Force in National and Inter-Service competitions, and cross-country ski marathons all over Europe. During the summer, we use roller skis that allow us to train throughout the year and focus on the Nordic ski techniques. We also represent the Royal Air Force in GB Roller Ski Championship competitions across the UK. All equipment is provided to ensure our members can achieve their potential from the outset.

Snowsport Scotland logo

Snowsport Scotland is appointed by sportscotland (the National Agency for sport) to act as the Scottish Governing Body (SGB) for snowsports in Scotland. As such they work in partnership with like-minded organisations to encourage more participation in snowsports and to develop and support their best athletes to perform on the world stage. Every four years they publish a new 4 year strategic plan that details their strategic outcomes and priorities for the new Olympic cycle.

Snowsport Cymru Wales is the governing body for skiing and snowboarding in Wales, recognised by Sport Wales. Their aim and focus is to:
  • increase participation in snow-sports
  • develop sustained participation in snowsports
  • identify and help develop talented performers in snowsports
They are in the initial stages of developing a cross country skiing community and a Director of Nordic skiing is now in place with Snowsport Wales, an advisory committee and club system will follow next. At the moment skiers tend to train individually or get together in small groups to train in various places. There are two websites identified above where you can make contact.
