Extending across pristine meadows and rolling hills between Kitzbühel Alps and Wilder Kaiser Mountain Range, a hidden world of beauty and adventure invites winter enthusiasts to discover the joy of cross country skiing. Explore the trails around St. Johann in Tirol, in the Pillerseetal Valley, which is endowed with some of the deepest snowfall in the Kitzbühel Alps, and in the Hohe Salve Region. The well-marked trail network features over 700 kilometers of tracked and skate-groomed terrain for skiers, ideally suited to all ability levels, from novice to expert. There is no fee to use the trails in the Kitzbühel Alps; a small fee applies to the trails in Pillerseetal Valley. Looking for a memorable night skiing experience? Sections of the village XC ski tracks in Waidring and in Hochfilzen are lit for night skiing.
You’ve never cross country skied? The Angerberg Nordic Center has got a lesson for you. Introductory clinics are held each Thursday at 18:30 (bookings essential – please contact the Angerberg/Mariastein Tourist Information Office at firstname.lastname@example.org or call +43. 57507.7000). Each Monday, the Nordic Academy in Hochfilzen offers try-out clinics for cross country skiers. Immerse yourself in pure cross country skiing culture in the winter with events like the annual BMW IBU Biathlon World Cup in Hochfilzen and the Pillerseetal Valley Folk Biathlon. One of Tirol’s oldest signature Nordic ski races, the legendary annual International Koasalauf, is held each February in St. Johann in Tirol: The lofty mountain massif of Wilder Kaiser, lovingly dubbed Koasa, gave the race its name and is towering competitors all along their way. Biathlon, the winter sport that combines cross country skiing and rifle shooting, is especially popular in the resort of Hochfilzen. Each winter, hundreds of biathlon enthusiasts (including many Olympic hopefuls) train and race here.
