Situated in the Val d’Anniviers, in the area of Sierre, Grimentz lies at 1564 metres and is one of several small 15th century heritage villages that are easily accessible on the free bus services within the valley. There are 11K of cross country skiing in Grimentz with another 12K classic and 7K of skating in Zinal, a short bus ride away. So whilst there are hundreds of kilometres, there would be enough skiing locally for a few days. To get more variety you would need to travel a little further afield and would need a car, and some options are below. However, you can intersperse nordic skiing with cultural visits on your days off, or go snow shoeing or biking, or over to the dark side for some down hill skiing and you will find this a charming place to stay.
Further information is also available in an article in our Partner's magazine - The Nordic Approach.

Geneva Airport provides the easiest transfer to Grimentz. The airport is very easy to navigate and it takes about 5 minutes to get from the arrivals exit to the rail station platforms.
Zurich and Basel Airport are also viable options. However, the rail journeys are slightly longer/slightly more expensive, and involve a change of trains. (But, the inclusive rail/bus deal is the same fixed price from any of the airports.)
From the rail station within Geneva Airport there are two direct trains an hour to the local town of Sierre, from where you can connect just outside the rail station with the local bus to Grimentz. The train takes about 2 hours and, on a clear day, this journey provides stunning scenery as it travels along Lake Geneva and into Valais.
Sit on the right hand side of the train in the direction of travel for the good views.
For train times and the connecting bus details to Grimentz visit the Swiss Railways website. Buy the train ticket when you arrive at the airport rail station from the English speaking staff. Two singles on the trains are the same price as a return. You need to buy a ticket before boarding or you face a hefty fine. You can buy and print off your tickets in advance in the UK via the SBB website. There are inclusive train/bus ticket deals with the Swiss Transfer Ticket and Saver Day Pass.
Taxis are not likely to be much quicker between Geneva Airport and Sierre and are very expensive. There are also taxis available from Sierre station to Grimentz if you miss your bus connection but they are also more expensive.
It is viable to drive from England in a day via a ferry or Channel Tunnel. The most direct route is 565 miles from Calais to Grimentz and has an estimated drive time of 9 hours. This is a very direct route via Dijon, Besançon and Lausanne of which 500 miles are on the Autoroutes/Dual Carriageways.
The Channel Tunnel is the fastest option for the channel crossing, but if you want a more leisurely, generally cheaper option, take a look at the ferries to Calais or Dunkirk.
The en-route cities of Dijon and Besançon offer hotels at a range of prices for overnight stays and are interesting places to explore, if you have the time. There are also accommodation options in towns and villages including the lower price Ibis and Relais de France hotels. Once you get beyond Besançon, the Jura region offers some road side family owned hotels and inns in rural settings.
There is a free ski bus available during the winter months.
This is the ski bus timetable.
Local buses also go between the towns and this is their timetables and routes.
The Anniviers Valley has marked tracks for all levels of cross-country skiers. For more variety, why not ski to Vercorin or Zinal for a breathtaking trip across the valley. Unless you would prefer to go out in the evening cross-country skiing along the one and a half kilometres of Zinal’s lit up track. Refer to the Ski touring map of Grimentz where this is shown as the Green 3 to see the layout.
A loop in Zinal at the foot of the Couronne Impériale, the “imperial crown” of 4,000 metre peaks that frame the valley. The trail is easily accessible, suitable for both classic and skate skiing, and does not present any special difficulty.
It boasts scenery to take your breath away so take care not to trip up on your skis as you admire the impressive peaks!
The cross-country ski trail begins at the car park of Plats de la Lée (alternatively you can start below the Hôtel Europe). If you tackle the loop clockwise, starting on the right (east) bank of the river, you will climb gently as far as the Gietti bridge. Here, you cross over to the left bank, and follow it downhill to the Singline bridge. From this point, you have the option of continuing as far as the Barmette bridge and then returning to the Singline bridge (e.g. if you have parked at the Singline car park).
Illuminated in the evenings until 9 pm.
The majority of the Randa trail winds through snowy woodland. The highest point of the trail is reached after around 1.5 kilometres and is followed by the first exciting descent, past Camping Attermenzen and back towards Randa. The trail topography here is also hilly and you need all your concentration to ensure you don't end up falling in the snow on the short descents. There is a total of 208M of ascent.
If you’d prefer less challenging terrain, head for the easier trail in Täsch.
Depending on the snow conditions, the Täsch and Randa trails are linked together.
The trail in Täsch can be reached from Zermatt in 12 mintues by rail.
There are changing facilities, lockers and toilets available in the Matterhorn Terminal Täsch.
Equipment can be hired in Alpini Sport (Täsch).
This is a 1hr 20 minute drive from Grimentz and useful as a training loop if combined with some sight seeing.
In a paradisiacal snowy landscape, the Simplon Pass offers you a cross-country trail prepared in classic and skating style. The historic pass crossing is also open in winter and is an ideal recreation area with plenty of snow.
Located on the south side of the pass, the track offers ideal training conditions due to its altitude of 1850 metres above sea level. The circuit starts at the Barralhaus and leads in a short ascent up to the Alter Spittel.
The building was the original hospice built by Kaspar Stockalper. The three upper floors served the Stockalper family as a summer residence. Below, poor travellers were given free accommodation and meals.
The trail continues over the plain of the hamlet of Gampisch, which is farmed in summer. Afterwards, the trail leads back to the Barralhaus, which is a real eye-catcher for visitors with its floor plan of 7x120 metres. It was built by the clergyman Pierre Barral, who built the building as holiday accommodation for his pupils. However, Barral went bankrupt before the building was completed. Today, the Barralhaus is owned by the army.
On the Simplon Pass there are two hotels with restaurant and the historical hospice which you can visit.
This is a 45 minute drive from Grimentz and has around 7 routes which you can seee here
A 1 hour drive from Grimentz
This climb through the eastern sector of the ski area joins the Crêt-du-Midi and takes you through the pasture of Tracuit. This is generally sunny in the first part of the day, and ideal for a break. The second part is a little more technical. It will take you to the top by crossing an area of wildlife tranquility. On this part, stick strictly to the markup.
The route starts at the bus stop in the village of St-Jean, at 1327m, and crosses pastures, before continuing in the forest, until Chiesso Blanc. There is a change of scenery for the second part, with a regular climb around the ski area, which allows you to reach the top of the Grands Plans chairlift. At that height there are a few meters left to complete this route. Once at the top, it only remains to enjoy the breathtaking view before your descend.
Our recommendation would be to stay at
Apartment Bon Sejour.
The apartment is very comfortably furnished with lounge seating for eight, and one double bedroom and one twin bedroom, which sleeps 5, and there is also underground parking. The modern kitchen includes induction hob, oven, microwave, and Nespresso machine plus an extensive provision of cooking equipment as the owners are keen cooks, and of course there is also a dishwasher and fridge.
Situated opposite the ski lifts and the piste, the apartment is just 100m from the main supermarket and the bus stop and on the edge of the old village with stunning views. Ski hire and other food shops and apres ski cafes and bars are close by too. If you aren’t out enjoying the snow or the scenery, you can sit in the living room or on the front balcony and watch the skiing or general village life or curl up with one of the books from the eclectic range provided.
You can find lots of information online at the tourist website about the town and its services.
For cross country ski rentals we recommend Do Sports
We don't known of any tour operators who currently feature packages to the Val D'Anniviers, but you can easily put together your own travel arrangements and stay.
